Hair Care: It Starts at the Scalp

Most men focus on the hair they see. Very few think about the scalp underneath. But healthy-looking hair begins at the root. Literally.

1. Your Scalp Is Skin
Your scalp is an extension of your facial skin. It has oil glands, pores, and a microbiome. When it’s unbalanced, your hair shows it.

Excess oil, product buildup, and sweat can clog follicles and create irritation. On the other hand, over-washing strips natural oils and triggers even more oil production.

If your hair gets greasy within hours, or feels dry and brittle, your scalp might be out of balance.

A good shampoo should cleanse without leaving your scalp tight or itchy. If you use styling products daily, consider a deeper cleansing shampoo once or twice a week to remove buildup.

2. Dandruff Is Not Just Dryness
Many people think dandruff means dry scalp. Often, it’s the opposite.

Dandruff is commonly linked to excess oil and a yeast called Malassezia that naturally lives on the scalp. When oil levels increase, it can trigger flaking and irritation.

An anti-dandruff shampoo with ingredients like zinc or ketoconazole helps control this imbalance. Consistency matters more than switching products every week.

3. Conditioner Is Not Optional
Conditioner does not make your hair “soft” in a bad way.

It smooths the hair cuticle, reduces friction, and prevents breakage. Especially if you’re exposed to sun, gym sweat, or frequent washing.

Apply mainly to the hair, not the scalp. Leave it for one to two minutes before rinsing.

Healthy hair is not about volume or style. It’s about strength, cleanliness, and control.
